Reaching from the farthest limits of outer space, local area musicians from the jazz group, TEN 27, present an arts and science multimedia show called the Black Book Project. The show is a multimedia production which includes images from the Hubble Space Telescope and original jazz compositions. TEN 27 debuted "The Black Book Project" at the Egg, Performing Arts Center, Empire State Plaza, Albany, New York on Saturday November 1, 2008.
This live concert performance featured the release of the new CD companion entitled, "The Black Book Project". The CD contains the original works from the show performed by TEN 27, which is comprised of Michael Roach on keyboards, Monica Wilson-Roach on electric cello, and Paul Borrello on mallet-kat and drums. One pivotal composition on the CD features Grammy Award winning guitarist, Vernon Reid of the band, Living Colour.
The multimedia show combines live original jazz inspired by spectacular images of the cosmos. The actual images from the Hubble Space Telescope will be displayed during the performance. Images were collected from HubbleSite.org, Nasa.gov, and the Hubble Heritage Society websites. Information has been gathered from various sources including: Astronomy Magazine, the Department of Terrestial Magnetism, and Dr. Harry I. Ringermacher, astrophysicist consultant. Dr. Ringermacher is a long-time research physicist for General Electric, two time Copper Black Award winner, and NASA committee member on Non-Wartime technologies.
This project gave each member of the jazz trio an opportunity to showcase
their special interests and talents. Monica Wilson-Roach, former teacher and
Department Head of Cello at the Juilliard School of Music Pre College
Division, M.A.P, and current teacher of the Empire State Youth Orchestra
City Strings Training Program brought her educational skills and love of
cosmology to The Black Book Project. She wrote and co-wrote pieces for the
project and researched information on cosmology. Michael Roach has a strong
background in solo jazz performance and visual arts. He brings his passion
of composition and the production of the visual portion to the multimedia
show. Paul Borrello has formal orchestral percussion training as well as
experience with many contemporary drumming styles, including jazz. His
introduction of the mallet-kat shows that he is a masterful
dual-instrumentalist, adding a new dimension to the jazz trio.
